(You can hold down your mouse button and run it across the grid to activate many squares at once. Hint: hit your spacebar to deactivate all of them at the same time.)

Seriously, this thing is utterly addictive.

If you desire the embed code to post this somewhere else, just leave me a comment or a note or email me, and I'll send it. (I saw this posted all over Tumblr, but figuring out how to get the actual code to put it into LJ took some doing.)

When I get home, I'll post some proper credit for it.

Apparently, Merriam-Webster online has crowned "w00t" as its Word of the Year for 2007. (Really? Not "lolcat"?)

Not actually in time for the holidays, but... you need a Boba Fett-shaped 1gb (or up to 4gb) flash drive, right? Sure you do! (I really don't get why the Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, and R2D2 ones have the little ears.)

Never let it be said that Harvard doesn't know how to have fun: ROFLcon, taking place (tentatively) April 25-26, 2008. What? you say. From the website: "This is the ongoing record of an effort to assemble every famous internet meme or celebrity to come to Harvard in the spring of 2008 to attend a conference. Presumably, they're going to talk about fame online. But with Homestar Runner and Dinosaur Comics coming and Goatse on the guest list, getting there is going to be about 80% of the fun." (Guest list also includes: XKCD, someone from 4chan, Red vs. Blue, Chuck Norris Facts, LOLcats Bible, Anil Dash from 6A, and many more!) Man, I'm tempted...

Hey, folks! Some news on the ongoing series of Stargate action figures.

Series 2 (Sam, Teal'c variations, Thor) is supposed to be out this month, but various sites I've seen are still listing them as pre-orders.

The newsflash here is about SERIES 3, which is supposed to be out in Feb. 2007.

Apparently it will consist of:

Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell (olive BDUs)
Vala Mal Doran (olive BDUs)
Vala Mal Doran (black bustier outfit from her debut)
Daniel Jackson (black-ops variant)
Cigarette-Smoking Prior (no, that's not what it's called, but it's a Prior based clearly on the one played by William B. Davis)

Go here for pictures:
http://timespacetoys.stores.yahoo.net/stse3setof5.html

The previous two sets of figures having come with pieces that let you assemble the Stargate, apparently this set will come with pieces that will let you assemble a DHD. (But it sort of sounds like you won't be able to assemble the full DHD, and if this runs true to form, we'll have to wait for series 4 for that.)

Still no word on the Atlantis action figures. :(

Yeah, I'm not the first to post on this, but mine just came today, so of course I had to do some SQUEEing! (*SQUEEEE*!!!!) And make some observations...

So yeah, the faces are still vaguely... wrong. I'm still wondering whether I could doctor the painting on them a bit. (What? I used to paint miniatures! Give me a break!)

The fact that the Daniel figure comes with [a] teeny little flexible glasses with actual clear plastic lenses, [b] a boonie, [c] something that is either a tablet or a piece of parchment, which he can actually grip, and [d] a magnifying glass (no archaeologist should be without one, I guess?), cracks me up.

Okay, so, granted: if you actually put the glasses *on* him, he looks like he's wearing WWI aviator goggles (Curse you, Red Baron!). And the boonie is... not so much a success, in terms of fitting on his head. (I don't get that; they make other accessories out of this soft flexible plastic: Jack's tac-vest, for example, and the BDU jackets of the torsos, as well as the fatigues tunic that Gen. Jack wears, are the same deal. Like, the BDU jacket collars are soft and flexible, and there's actually space between the t-shirt and the jacket -- which is where I wound up tucking the frame of the glasses. My point being: it was entirely within their capabilities to make a soft and completely hollow boonie that could have fit down on Daniel's head, but for some reason, they didn't.)

Also, the table/parchment is blank. Which I guess makes sense. And sets up a great joke along with the "magnifying glass": "Gosh, Daniel! The alien script on that tablet is so small you can barely see it! Lucky thing you have that magnifying glass along with you!" Har har! (Note: magnifying glass does not actually magnify.) I doubt that I can resist the temptation to put little hieroglyphics on it. Or! No! I know! I could make it a little alien Rosetta-stone-thing! With Asgard script and Ancient script and Furling script! Oooh!

Moving along... several things about the Serpent Guard also kind of delighted me. First, that they gave him one of those little round shock-grenade things. Cute! (Except his hands can't really hold it. And it is small and round and cannot *sit* on anything with trying to skitter away.) But then they give you *two* tips for the staff weapon -- closed, and open. Now, that's a neat idea (although obviously it would have been a skillion times cooler if they'd made it able to open and close on its own. But the switch-in tips is a nice compromise.) But best of all -- the Serpent Guard's head *pops off*! And then the Serpent Helmet pops *on*! That's pretty cool. And a fairly reasonable way to deal with that issue, I guess. (I had assumed that the helmet would just be partly hollow and fit on over his actual head, but I wondered how bulky that would be. Problem solved.)

This led me to experimentation with some of my multitude of Jacks (now *there* is a happy thought!). This was my conclusion: Jack and Daniel's heads pop off, too. Perhaps they are not SUPPOSED to, but they do, and then you can get them back on again, so long as you are willing to use sufficient force and be a bit patient. (Experiment conducted with Black Ops Jack.) A little investigation suggested that their hands might pop off in the same way, although I haven't actually done it yet. This means of course that if you really wanted to, you could... well, you could have BDU Jack without a hat, or you could put the black fingerless gloves hands on BDU Jack (who has also been painted with Young Jack brown hair, btw). Or you could have Black Ops Daniel. etc.

Sekrit Message for Jenlev: it's a GDO. I swear. :) But no, I have no idea why all of the regular run of figures get these weird white vibrator-resembling GDOs. But the Black T-shirt Jack from FCBD had a properly grey GDO.

Sooper Sekrit Other Message for Jenlev: I see what you mean about it being difficult to snap the Gate together.

So basically, right now above my computer, Daniel appears to be trying to talk to Totoro. (Sadly, not to scale; now *that* would be awesome.) And Jack is contemplating zatting a deinonychus (as well he should). (That *is* to scale, actually.) And I am amused.

None of these are scoops or anything, but you know, if you haven't seen them... I'm a few days behind, but I haven't seen mention or discussion of these things on my flist thus far...

AT and RDA comments vaguely re. S10 and ship... Nothing specific or that alarming, just fodder for hmms... )

Hey! Fandemonium's SG-1 novels will now be sold in the US! )

More on the action figures... )

Finally... one of the radio stations that I listen to in the car in the morning does this thing called "BackSpin", which is, they pick a year, and do a block of songs from that year. It can be kind of fun, and they seem to enjoy finding some popular songs from that year that you haven't heard in a while (rather than the ones that are still getting airplay).

This morning, the year was 1982, and as this song came on, I knew it INSTANTLY even though I knew I had not heard it in YEARS, from the instrumental opening alone, but I couldn't think what the song was. And then the singing started and I was singing along, and I still could not remember the song's *name* until we got to the chorus.

It was "Don't Pay the Ferryman" by Chris De Burgh. Wow. What a delightfully cheesy song that was!

Now what I want to know is -- has anyone done a H:TLJ vid to that song? Because, *seriously*... wow, how much fun would that be?

As a follow-up to my previous post on the First Wave of SG-1 action figures... pics of the SG-1 Second Wave action figures have surfaced, so here is what I've found so far! Pictures behind the cut...

Sam, Teal'c x3, Thor )

For you SGA fans out there, the same company is supposed to be coming out with a line of SGA figures as well. But so far I haven't been able to turn up info or pics of them.

For the three of you out there who are also interested in the Stargate action figures that are coming out, some further information... (some are now for sale on eBay; more news on variants, including Desert Cammo [sic] Daniel Jackson in the 'do-rag beloved by so many; plus, don't forget your free Jack figure avail. from some comic shops on Free Comic Book Day, this Sat., etc.)...

Don't you wish we could get sales demographics of these broken down so that we could tell how many were being bought by slasher women, as opposed to how many are actually being bought by guys, pure collectors, and/or kids who actually intend to play with them? )

Though I feel fairly good about having scooped early pics of the Jack figure, we are now getting more info, via a Q&A at Gateworld:

http://www.gateworld.net/news/2006/02/stargateactionfigureqapart.shtml

One of the things this Q&A emphasizes is that all of the pics we have seen of all of the figures so far are *still* the prototypes. As we were speculating earlier, the right heads may not have been on the right bodies, and individual details are still being worked out. (For example, even at the time of the Q&A they say they are still trying to decide between removable glasses for Daniel, and ones molded onto the figure.) (Personally, I think the latter would probably come out looking better, but I can see the appeal of the former.)

Another nice thing -- check out the last pic of a Jack figure, way down on the page -- this shows standard offworld Jack wearing the correct BDU jacket underneath his tac-vest, not the longer tunic-shirt for base wear (and the Gen. O'Neill figure, at the top, is correctly wearing the base fatigues tunic, not the offworld BDU jacket). Amusingly, this prototype Jack is "young" Jack -- his hair's all brown.

The fact that there are still articulations to be cut into the figures makes me a little nervous. That could be done well, or... not. We'll see, I guess.

Oh, and the full Gate won't be able to be completed until the entire wave 2 set of figures is out. Darn!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] telepresence for the heads-up on this one:

http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2104&Itemid=2

If this does not link you directly, the headline for the article is midway down the page.

I find this sad, because I was personally looking forward to it. I also find it sad because the show people put some amount of effort into cooperating with the project -- MS talked about having recorded 200 pages' worth of dialogue for the game, and RDA did a similar amount, I think -- and now all of that is down the drain, wasted. And, as stated previously, I'm sad because this would have been, in some ways, some "new" Jack material that we would have gotten, and "classic" Jack, classic team, at that. I also think it's kind of a bummer from a franchise POV.

However, I do understand the problem from a marketing standpoint, that there was no use bringing out a game that would already have looked out of date. That while it might have been fun for people who were already rabid SG fans, for the game to be successful and for it to be beneficial to the franchise, it needed not to incur the contempt of people who are foremost gaming aficionadoes.

It's just... still a pity that it bombed, whatever the reasons for it having bombed.

*cries* Don't you just hate it when you compose a really long, complicated LJ entry... and then by mistake you hit the close button of the window and all that work goes *poof*?

Probably better for all of you, though, as now this will be much better organized.

First up, the images (they're thumbnails, click on them for a larger image):

This has the figures available for pre-order, supposedly shipping in June 2006. Various sites that I found are confusing on the issue of when these Series 1 figures will be released -- Forbidden Planet UK said as early as Feb. 2006 (wouldn't it be just like the UK to get them before the US?), another place said late July, still another said "3rd quarter 2006"... so, your guess is as good as mine.

This link has the best selection of pics, including the Serpent Guard (who appears to be a First Prime) with his helmet off. I'll link to a helmet-on shot in a moment. Also -- contrary to the pic on this site (you can click on the tiny thumbnail to see a larger version of the group shot), the Stargate is going to be in-scale with the figures. (But will it light up? That's the real question!) It would seem that, to get the Gate, you have to buy each of the figs in the series, as they each come with a piece of it. Huh.

Further: all the shots I have been able to find use the Daniel figure *prototype* that we saw earlier in Gateworld. So what does that mean? Are these Jack figures prototypes as well? Or what?

(You can see the Serpent Guard with his helment on, here.)

What I hate is when you get all tied up in knots doing an art project -- the kind where you really are trying hard to make it look exactly the way you want it to look, but the more you work on it, the more frustrating it is, and then you get to a point where maybe it's okay, but you can't TELL any more, because probably no matter what, it all looks wrong. Even though somebody outside your own head will probably say it's *fine*. But you don't want it to be "fine". You want it to be *perfect*.

This happens with writing too, of course. So even if you don't draw, I'm sure a lot of you will know what I mean. Grrrrr....

In other news: "Soul Caliber III" rocks hard. I went over to [livejournal.com profile] telepresence's place on Friday and after dinner we played a lot of it. Now, see, in SCII, I have been modestly famous amongst my group of friends for two things -- playing Cervantes (the hulking undead pirate) 99% of the time; and what I am told is a wildly entertaining "style" of play involving frantic random button-mashing and a lot of really blistering cursing (at myself, at the controller, at the characters on the screen -- "hit him, HIT HIM YOU MOTHERFUCKER, die die die", etc.). Occasionally, for a change-up, I play Raphael, but not as often as I played Cervantes. And very very occasionally, I would play Voldo (even though he icked me out), for the entertainment value, or Ivy. But basically, I was in a rut.

So imagine my surprise when SCIII turned out to have a *whole bunch* of characters I like to play.

The new version of Cervantes is cool -- yeah, I had to check out My Man first. His costume 1/color 2 combo is good. (Seriously, the costume choices can sometimes make or break characters; in the last game, Ivy -- who is Cervantes' daughter, in some odd way, btw -- had an acceptable costume choice that was basically "Napoleonic officer drag or something". In the new game, she doesn't -- all her costumes are slut-wear, which I avoid like the plague -- and this is a great, great loss.) But, but... there are OTHERS that are cool, too!

Revenant is a new character, as far as I can tell, but the ultra-cool thing is -- he's a SKELETON undead pirate! You can now have the Undead Pirate Show-Down! ROCK ON! (Cervantes' main costume is very Blackbeard, which is why I like it -- I don't like his #2 at all -- but Revenant's is like a cross between a Musketeer and an Elizabethan. Very nice.)

I'm actually annoyed by the new Raphael -- even more than by the old Raphael, who let's face it, was a pompous twit and the only reason to play him is that he's a fencer -- because I am told he's a VAMPIRE now or something, and he's done something egregious with his hair. I cannot STAND vampires, mostly, and what I *seriously* cannot stand are froufy, self-important, pompous Anne Rice-like vampires. Bleah. But he still fights beautifully, I have to admit.

However, both costume choices for the new Yoshimitsu? (Who is, I think, some kind of ghost-samurai, whose real face you never see.) AWESOME. One is a mask that is essentially a big SQUID HAT. Or maybe it's an octopus. With tentacles and everything. It rocks in both color choices, and his #1 mask is kind of cool too.

And Voldo? Okay, Voldo is still the freak we know and love, but somehow, he's just not as *scary* freaky in this verison, if you pick his #2 costume, with is FREAKIN' GORGEOUS. Because he's wearing a Sun mask and a sort of RenFaire doublet and all in gold, in the front; but the back half of the costume is all midnight blue, and on the BACK of his head he's wearing a Moon mask. This is tres cool, because Voldo has a fighting style where sometimes, for kicks, he really does just do a lot of his fighting backwards. Only now he's got a face on both sides! It's extremely pretty, rather than just FREAKY like Voldo's costumes in SCII. And it also has the smallest codpiece of any of his costumes, which believe me is a VERY good thing.

Then there is Zasalamel. It only took them until the third version, but SC finally gives us a black character -- and he *rocks*. In both costumes. (He's.... sort of Egyptian or something, and he fights with a big scythe, and he has a good voice.) I liked playing him a lot. (I have this thing, obviously, for playing the big hulking male characters whose fighting style consists of a lot of pounding.)

And even though I didn't play him -- Rock's mastodon mask is tres cool, too. SCIII has done a fairly great job with accessories this time around. (Except for Ivy's net-fringed hat. What the HELL is that?)

And finally, Lizardman. I didn't really watch much game-play back in the Soul Edge days, so I didn't remember Lizardman, who was apparently Stephen's favorite. But the new Lizardman is awesome. He's *adorable*. He's got a feathery ruff and feathers on his tail and one of his special jumps is this wonderful lizardy kicking-gutting move, if you can get it to go right.

The other big thing about SCIII, though, is the "create a character" feature. This is fairly nifty. The only thing that would make it better would be if you got the full range of choices to start with, instead of having to go through and earn/buy them -- but I can understand the logic behind that play-design. First, Len and I created a male character named Barry, who was a bit of a hodge-podge, and also, we didn't know what we were doing. When you're creating a character, you first pick "type", only as far as I could see they don't really tell you or show you what some of the types mean ("barbarian" I got, though they should have just said "swordsman"; "ninja" I got -- but what's a "saint"? what's a "dancer"? etc.). So we picked dancer. Well... okay, the only thing I can really say is... WOW. Apparently the programming for dancer-fighters was seriously geared towards the "girls", and when you pick a guy for that, and you dress him as badly as we dressed him... let's just say I couldn't even SEE part of the fight because I was laughing so hard.

But then I created a cool girl fighter called Philomena, who was a "saint" (because we were curious), which turns out to mean "fights with a staff", which is okay. She wasn't bad. So, the Character Creation feature -- addictive, crack-like. Very smart move on the game-makers' parts.

Maybe I will try to hunt down some screen-caps, for illustrative purposes.

Swear to god, I'm closer to getting a PS2 than I have ever been...
eregyrn: (Default)
This makes me very sad:

http://www.gateworld.net/news/2005/08/jowoodscrapsistargatesg-1i.shtml

("JoWood scraps Stargate SG-1: the Alliance Video Game")

Odd as it may seem, I was actually really excited about the game. I am not a big gamer (most of my friends would say that, apart from the occasional entertaining button-mashing on "Soul Caliber II", I am not a gamer *at all*), although I've been tempted by various things -- but this was making me plan on acquiring a used PS2 console or something to play it on. I was all excited over the screenshots of it that were released a few weeks ago.

But mostly -- well, call me pathetic, but I was honestly thinking to myself on Friday night, well, that's it, there's no more Jack on SG-1 to look forward to, but I can look forward to the game, because in a sense, that's *sort of* some new Jack stuff, and new old-team stuff.

Considering that MS said that he recorded something like 200 pages of script for it himself (I think that's the correct number), and I imagine the other cast did roughly the same; and considering all the trouble they went to, to scan the actors' faces and all -- dude, that is a *LOT* of pretty good material down the drain, there. There's the question of whether they will ever resurrect the game, and re-use any of that. One would like them to -- but if they do resurrect the game, what are the odds that they'll scrap all the old stuff and redesign it from the bottom up to be geared towards the New Team? (*sob*) Although, [livejournal.com profile] telepresence commented to me that if their main concern is moving it to a different, newer engine to work with the next generation of platforms, it may be more possible that they'll retain the existing material. Dunno.

But... poop. Not this year, anyway. Phooey.
