Video for "Personal Jesus", 1989:

Originally, I was hunting this down for [livejournal.com profile] raqs, because she introduced me to the Marilyn Manson cover recently, but she was unaware it was a cover of this older song. I hadn't seen the video... since it came out, basically, I think. But I figured YouTube must have it. And then I thought, why not share it with everyone?

Now, the weird thing? This isn't the video for the song that I remember. :-/ So now I'm trying to figure out what video I *am* remembering, and what it could possibly be *for*.

Have you both heard the Johnny Cash cover? It's pretty cool and I kind of like it more than the Marilyn Manson version.

I ran across it while shopping on iTunes for the MM cover, and bought both. :) I like 'em both in different ways. It seems fitting that Cash covered it.

The acoustic Depeche Mode version is really good, and actually the Cash version sounds a lot like it, which kind of reduces the innovation of the Cash version.

Can you describe the video you're thinking of?

Very similar, but... Western desert landscape. But (IIRC), bright, super-saturated colors. (Rather than the sepias/b&w's of this vid.) Guys in black. What I see most clearly in my head is a shot from ground level, looking out at a highway, with a lizard in the near foreground. I also see in my head a guy in black, with black sunglasses and cowboy boots, tapping his heel to (what I really thought was) the rhythm of this particular song.

That sounds really familiar, but isn't any of the 5 or 6 videos I just checked out. Have you seen them in concert, because maybe it was something they showed on the video screen? If what I'm remembering is what you're describing the guys all go into either a bar or a diner and are sitting at an L shaped counter at some point.

Sort of like that famous Edward Hopper painting?

Nope, never saw them in concert.

Not getting a *ping* off the bar/diner image, but that might not mean anything. (Clearly my brain will LATCH onto something, but not necessarily retain other stuff.)

I've forwarded this to my friend [livejournal.com profile] joncwriter, whose encyclopedic knowledge of music and videos puts all to shame. In the meantime, I'm having a grand old time watching old DM videos on Youtube!

OMG I know what you're talking about, and no I can't remember what it's called. Augh!

This is going to drive me craaaazy!

*deep, resigned sigh from the aging goth girl*

Well, it's not like it's a "kids today!" thing. She's my age. ;-) And I was *never* a goth-girl, but we were in college at the time, it's not like we were *unaware* of Depeche Mode. My belief is that she somehow managed to write over the sectors of her brain that had been aware of the song from when it came out. Because there is no other logical explanation for how *I* would have known about it at that time, but she didn't.

Still... That's no excuse for thinking Marilyn Manson wrote an original song that's *that* good! =P

This is true. I can't think of anything that Manson originally wrote that was actually good.

I like "The Beautiful People". It was the only MM song I actually owned, prior to buying the "Personal Jesus" cover.

I always loved this one. Dave Gahan in a lawn chair on top of a mountain dressed like a king? What could be more *right*? ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQtzOOz6Y6c

Yah. Personal Jesus. Loving it.

I really liked Depeche Mode a lot more than I was willing to admit at the time, and although I don't have much time for Marilyn Manson (he's one of these kids who loves to shock but forgets it's all been done before) he does make good cover choices and normally does a decent job of them.
