I would say something sweeping and generic about cats and their walnut-sized brains, but rather than impugn the cats of others, I'll just impugn the brains of my OWN cat, which is much safer.

Recipe for Winter Fun with Cats:

* snow falls

* cat cries at door to be taken out

* put harness on cat

* take cat out into snow

* cat uses facial expression to convey opinion of snow

* let cat back inside

* wait approx. one week.

* snow falls

* cat cries at door to be taken out

* put harness on cat

* take cat out

* cat expresses with body language: "what is all this frozen white shit on the ground?"

* "not what I wanted!"

* let cat back inside

* wait one week

* snow falls

* cat cries at door to be taken out

* put harness on cat

* take cat out into snow

* cat finds that snow is up to chest

* "not what I wanted! let me back in!"

Seriously, people! We're getting snowstorms EVERY week. Emily cries at the door all the time to be let out again, only to get out there and find that there's STILL frozen white shit all over the place, and it's cold, and... no. She's back at the door again, fastidiously standing on the sill, wanting back inside.

I guess don't REALLY expect her to learn. She's a CAT. I just would think she'd remember "it sucks out there" from one week to the next.

Yesterday we got 8", and then overnight we got about 4" more. Today when I went out to shovel out the car (AGAIN!), I left her inside.

- fantastically leaning ramparts of snow on porch railings:

- snow piles (from plow) taller than the Little Car:

- impressive oak tree. I can see this tree through the window of my bathroom; it is often very pretty in the early morning light when it's covered with snow, but unfortunately I never quite remember to get a picture of that:

- cat waits inside:

We had a cat when I was a kid who would forget it was raining from the front door to the back door. Well, either that or he was really, really optimistic. A week is nothing.

We didn't get as much as you did (a foot? Damn) but I did have to dig out again this afternoon. I'm running out of places to put the parking space snow at this point; the pile in the next-door-neighbor's teeny front garden is taller than I am.

Silly primate. Don't you know it's *YOUR* job to get rid of all that crap so she can have a fulfilling outdoors experience?

Primates!

Can't live with 'em, can't open cans without 'em.

Aww, poor Emily. It reminds me of Heinlein's Door into Summer where the narrator's cat demands he open each door in the house because one of them might lead to summer.

Oh, I'd forgotten to go look for that first post, so thanks for this. Oy, CATS.

This is the reason why I bought Henlein's Door into Summer, just for the first brilliant page.

BWAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

:::flails with laughter:::

Oh kitty.

:::flails with laughter some more:::

Your post is made of win though.

I am about to take Indigo out for a walk in the hallway. We are NOT going downstairs or outside.

PS. Indigo once put his paw through the crack made by the hinge of the fridge door when I opened it. He was on the outside, I wasn't. So I didn't observe his experiment. Which ended with him shrieking in dismay as I shut said door. He's never forgotten. Also, he apparently now remembers that the door to the stairs leads to the stairs. Which leads to strange people in big coats. We'll see how long this lasts...

That was last week, (and the week before that, and the week before that), and THIS is this week! It's totally different!

Our cat used to scratch at the door to be let outside, I'd get up, open the door, she takes one look and turns back around to lay down in front of the fireplace again. Repeat approximately 5 times with no more than 30 minutes in between. The 6th or so times, she usually really needed to go and would walk into the snow, do her business and be back in 5 seconds flat. :)

My dog used to whine at the door to be let outside, and then he'd wait until you were almost there, run past you back into the living room, and steal your spot on the couch. And then when you came in to go all, "WTF, dog! Why you be hatin'?!" he'd look at you with big puppy eyes like he just had NO idea what you'd persecute him. TRUE STORY.

LOL! That's hilarious.
My dear kitty would walk over to the rug and start playing with it, and I'd tell her to stop. Imagine most innocent eyes. Then she'd walk over and grab the nearest toy, put it under the rug and played with the rug. And you'd call her name again and she'd look at you with big innocent eyes as if saying 'I'm playing with my toy, which just happens to be under your rug.' I swear! Sneaky little bastards they are.

Can you teach her that snow is edible? It worked with Natasha; since we don't get much snow down here in ATL, the first time we got snow (~4"), she freaked out in the yard because everything looked - and more importantly, SMELLED - different. Then I scooped up a bit of snow in my hand and presented it to her. "See? It's just snow. It's OK." She sniffed, then tasted, then gobbled. Then spent the rest of her romp outside trying to eat all the snow "Food fall from sky!!!"

Terribly amusing. Could be worth a try. :-)

I actually think Emily's too smart. She doesn't forget it sucks out there; she expects better, that's all. From you, from Mother Nature, from the world in general. "This fails to please me" is what she's thinking.
