Alerted by [livejournal.com profile] suzvoy and [livejournal.com profile] telepresence:

The official MGM site for both Stargates has a box for a poll in a prominent place on its front page. The current question is: "Favorite Atlantis Slash Pairings":

http://stargate.mgm.com/index.php

...

On the *official* MGM page. Okaaaaay.

The choices, btw are Sheppard/McKay, Teyla/Weir, and Ronon/McKay; no, I have absolutely no idea how they arrived at those three, although the first is pretty obvious. I don't usually visit this page, so I've no idea whether it's a different poll question each day, what past poll questions have been, if they've ever done a similar slash question for SG-1, who's in charge of coming up with the poll questions, etc.

Just... *really*, MGM? You want to know? Huh.

I voted for Ronon/McKay, just to be contrary. ;-) (Also, because if I *was* fannish for SGA, I'd be more into Ronon than into Sheppard.)

Aw! He's such a pup -- way too young for my tastes. ;-)

Technically, he's too young for me, as well. ;-) But I'm making an exception in his case.

(He's just so, SO pretty, plus, there's a combination in him of understated -- *cough* -- physical/martial competency, plus a laconic, dry sense of humor. Yup, that's all what tends to work with me. And unlike with Shep, the writers haven't given me conniptions with stuff they've done with him, so...)

Ha! Well, at least their webmaster wants to know. Or has no idea and is about to be surprised. Amusing!

It just seems a little too "plugged in" for whoever's responsible for putting it up to have done so naively. (Just the inclusion of femmeslash! That's pretty sophisticated, actually.)

Heh.

I’ve only been there a couple of times. Now, I’ll have to check the poll for slash every day. Hmm.

I really, REALLY want to know if they've ever done a slash survey for SG-1!

Aw, I’m strangely charmed by the fact that they included a femslash pair in there.

Also: Ronon/McKay. Huh!

The femmeslash pairing is a surprisingly fannishly-sophisticated choice, I feel.

(Unless it's someone who was basically told: "slash is pairing up two members of the same sex; now, come up with slash pairings that cover the main team!" And the someone is then logically thinking, "okay, okay, same-sex... so who the heck do I put with Teyla? ah!" Because, yes, there aren't many choices in the poll, and they didn't exactly do any innovate non-main-team pairings; like McKay/Zelenka, or something.)

Now -- do you mean "huh!" in a "I would never have thought of that pairing" way, or "huh!" in a "I'm surprised *they* thought of it" way?

No, I've read several good Ronon/Rodney fics and like the pairing well enough. I guess I'm surprised they thought of it? Those two characters haven't gotten a lot of scenes together. I know we as fans can do lots with what we do get--there are definitely moments you could point to if you were a McKay/Dex shipper--but I'm just wondering what led them to that choice over any other possibilities, whether it was random or whether they get a sense of that pairing as being popular in the fandom or what.

I think maybe I would have expected McKay/Beckett just because I get the sense that that has a fairly large fandom following, but of course with Sunday airing recently in the US it would be a problem.

Now I really wonder what the eyeball demographic for that web site is. The ratio between visitors who say "wtf?" and those who know wtf already.

And, of the first category, how tf are they reacting? It's not like it's hard to guess w. Tf.

Well, in that case, I am no longer going to feel even a twinge when people bring it up at cons. Because seriously.

Well, technically speaking, the actors aren't really implicated by this poll. (They're just, in the SGs anyway, implicated by a lot of other stuff.) You really do have to wonder who's represented by this poll -- I mean, it's MGM... not SciFi, not Bridge, etc.

Um. Not sure that I'm altogether comfortable with this, in the same way that I'm not altogether comfortable when it comes up at cons. It just feels vaguely squicky to me - like I'm about to be laughed at but I won't get the joke :-(

Yeah, I know what you mean, what with how few show-involved people can bring it up at cons without, essentially, tittering.

But on the other hand, what I find interesting about this is the very matter of fact presentation of it (like, "what? it's a perfectly normal poll question!"), and the slight sense of sophistication shown by including a femmeslash pair. (Because most of the tittering/jokes seems to be directed towards m/m "gay" stuff.)

It sure is... weird. That's my reaction to it, mostly. "That's... kinda weird." I don't entirely have a "w00t!" feeling about it. Not without knowing more context.

the very matter of fact presentation of it

The word that keeps popping into my head whenever I think about this is 'disingenuous'. It keeps getting those ol' alarm bells ringing. I'm wary of tptb getting too involved in fandom - that's not their function - so I can't help that nagging feeling that there's more to this than meets the eye.

I will of course be delighted to be proved wrong :-)

I'm with Katie on this. Knock yourselves out, con-attendees! I use to cringe on everyone's behalf, but what can you say to this?

Though it would be hilarious, and believable, if it were an MGM employee having fun and no one involved with the production of the show has a clue what goes on with the website.

[livejournal.com profile] telepresence and I were talking about this -- like, is this just one webmaintaining employee of MGM who's fannishly plugged in, and doing whatever the hell they want?

I pointed out that if it was *me*, I would be *tempted* to do stuff like this, but I don't think I would completely assume that my bosses were never going to happen to look at the page or have it brought to their attention or whatever. It's awfully blatant, right there on the front page.

But who knows -- maybe it's an employee who likes to live dangerously! Or, maybe it does have approval at a higher level. Or something. I can't figure it out!

Hee hee! That's funny. I believe they have a different question each day.

So I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] karlchristian and [livejournal.com profile] beerkitty last weekend. They said look up orca girl! So here I am. I think it's because I write fanfic, but for SGA.

Anyhoo, friend if you like!
