... For example, when you're just sitting there, re-reading a book (The Road to Ubar, I recommend it to anyone who thinks they would enjoy an entertainingly-written nonfiction account of archaeological exploration in the lower Arabian peninsula), with the cat on your lap (the grey one), and you're feeling reaaaaaally sleepy because you haven't been sleeping well the past few nights... and you close your eyes and yawn, and reach out with both hands and *scooch* the cat's butt for a while, which she puts up with... and all of a sudden your brain decides to give you -- completely unconnected to anything else, needless to say -- a quick burst of memory strongly associated with the weekend you spent in Williamsburg VA in 1985? '86? when you interviewed at William and Mary... to which school, of course, you didn't actually *go*.

WTF, brain?

Yep. This is why some of the stuff in The Matrix seemed pretty plausible. All our brains jacked into some computer - program futzes out, and blam, you get a nice random dose of whateverthefuck.

And then the brain - well, my brain, anyway - just sits there whistling innocently to itself.
