Whoa! I didn't see that coming... well, I didn't see that coming *today*, anyway.

I... need to process. I need to read more.

It wasn't that I wasn't expecting it, really.

Still, I need a hug. (just a little one)

Yeah. I felt prepared. I truly do think that this feels this upsetting *right now* primarily because I had just immersed myself in massive show-love over the weekend thanks to "200" and attendant stuff. I think I'd have felt less choked-up about it... at a slightly different time.

It is something of a slap after the squee that 200 produced; trust SFC to get the timing entirely wrong (again). But yeah, not completely surprising.

I feel for y'all who've been into the show for years and years, I really do. Your show!

Yeah, the timing is the worst part of this, actually. It's not like I wasn't prepared for it, in a whole lot of ways.

Though you could *perhaps* argue that the timing may work out better in the long run. I was just reading something today about them having yet to write the last few eps of the season, and them holding off to see whether it would be a season or a series finale. Obviously THEY saw the writing on the wall, too.

If an announcement NOW does give them time to wrap it up better, then, great. Hell, I bet they can even get RDA back one last time. :P Given the circumstances.

Well I need a huge hug. *glomps you* I'm so pissed at the crappy, clueless, tasteless timing of the announcement -- to cast and crew, and to us.

Date: 2006-08-21 10:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] eregyrn.livejournal.com
Yes. Amen to that. BAH!

The only bright side to it is that the timing MIGHT indeed make a difference to their being able to do up a proper series finale, now. They have at least 2 eps totally unwritten and I believe 18 is in an early stage.

Given the timing, they MIGHT be able to pull something out, go out in style.

It still hurts, though. Was really riding *such* a high from the weekend, and... POOP!

Honestly? I think this season has been about SciFi setting SG-1 up for cancellation. So while I'm upset, I'm not surprised.

Date: 2006-08-22 12:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] eregyrn.livejournal.com
No, totally. The only thing that surprises me about this, I meant, was the timing of announcing it today (after the "celebration", or "good times", if you will, surrounding the 200th ep) -- or, as it transpired, that SciFi would tell Bridge about it on the day of the damned party for "200". What, do the people at SciFi sit around and TRY to think what the worst possible timing for such an announcement would be?

Otherwise, yeah. The writing was there on the wall. I was definitely seeing it. SciFi was sending out signals right and left, honestly. Possibly also, as you say, setting it up in such a way so as to make their cancellation of it look natural, if you will. I'm not 100% sure *why*, but then I'm also not a fan who's going to say she's utterly shocked by it, so... yeah.

Well, it's not like Skiffy don't have a track record of this sort of stuff - both the "Change the time slot, stick it against a heavy-hitter, skimp on the advertising - oh, the ratings have fallen? Cancel it!" behaviour and the mean-spiritedness in the timing.

Date: 2006-08-23 03:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] eregyrn.livejournal.com
Word. At the time the whole FS debacle went down, I wasn't in the FS fandom, but me and all my friends were loyal and enthusiastic viewers of that show. I had celebrated SG-1 coming to SciFi simply because it concentrated the two shows I was most invested in. And so while I wasn't in the fandom, I was livid over the treatment of FS, and visiting th campaign sites and stuff.

I guess... two things. Time dulls memory, at least a little bit. Or else, makes one falsely optimistic. Not that Skiffy wouldn't behave moronically about a show, basically sabotaging it. I'm afraid my native optimism did not extend so far as to believe THAT. I suppose if I had optimism about anything, it would have been, "well, they'll play games, and cancel it unfairly -- but they won't be TOTAL ASSHOLES about it, surely they've learned THAT lesson".

Well... nope.

Look, Skiffy. I'm not part of the "rending garments" portion of the fandom. I can see a case for several points of view, one of which is, "it's time to retire it". That isn't necessarily my biggest beef with them. For me, it's not a FS situation, in the sense of, SG-1's just had so much longer and fuller a life than FS got, and that's what really hurt about FS. But *dude*. Way to be *as* tactless as humanly possible about the timing. That's what gobsmacks me.

SG-1's had a good long run by anyone's standards, really. But they could have ended it at the end of s8 and had a natural end point.

And I honestly wouldn't have expected it to make it past eleven seasons (and it sounds like the cast and producers didn't either), but having an eleventh as a planned "last season" would have made a nice run for the new cast and allowed them to wrap up the new storylines well. Hell, planning the tenth as the last season from the start would probably have worked fine.

Instead, Skiffy chose to "reboot" it in s9 and then sabotage it and cancel, in their inimitable manner. And yeah, the timing just smacks of this dumb, petty, gratuitous meanness.

And that just annoys me. As well as making me sad for my new Gater friends. Losing your show is a inevitably a sad thing, no matter when and how it ends.

Date: 2006-08-24 03:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] eregyrn.livejournal.com
Yeah, me too -- I was expecting S11 to be it. But I really was sort of expecting them to get that far. I truly didn't expect -- and I"m not sure they did either -- that Skiffy would basically start sabotaging it before S10 even started airing. Because what's up with that?

And they did. They screwed with it six ways from Sunday before the ratings numbers ever came in. Now Skiffy makes comments like, we just think this is the right time to retire it. Look, Skiffy -- okay, fair enough. But what you *DO* is you tell that to the show's makers before S10 premieres. Even then, the timing means that a portion of the season is already in the can. But *that* is the proper warning to give.

And then you still PROMOTE it, you morons -- you promote it as "see the final season of American television's longest-running scifi show!" And everyone knows from the start and there basically aren't all these damned hard feelings.

The thing is, I can't *quite* blame Skiffy for not doing the "generous" thing (which is, look at the show, see that it has started a bunch of story-arcs that need a S11 to deal with comfortably, and give it that), because it is not the only network that has pulled the plug on a show when all it needed was *one more season* to wrap up gracefully.

Exhibit A: Babylon 5. (Oh yes, I was there for that whole thing, too.)

Exhibit B: Deadwood. (WTF, HBO? No, really, *W*T*F*???)

And Skiffy's not the only network that shoots shows in the foot and then kicks them out when they inevitably underperform. (I'm lookin' at YOU, FOX.)

I've never understood what was going on in Skiffy's heads, though. Never. I didn't understand at all how they treated FS. Not why they decided not to keep it, I did sort of understand the economic considerations. But the WAY they did it, I never understood. And watching them make similar mistakes with SG-1... apparently they learned no lessons at all from the scolding they got over FS. Which I guess shouldn't surprise me, but... damn.

Ah!! No!!!

I mean, yes, I have like four seasons to catch up on still (darn my tv reception!), but aaaaaaahhhh! *pouts*

Also, I want to read the scrapped 'finale' scripts they wrote to end each season when they thought they were being cancelled - are they available anywhere, do you know?

Date: 2006-08-22 12:51 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] eregyrn.livejournal.com
Yeah, just get the DVDs. ;-)

I don't know that any of the previous "finale" scripts are available -- I think that they each just sort of got reworked very quickly. Like, I know that the finale of S6, "Full Circle", was the hastily-rewritten thing that they had originally intended to do as a post-series tv-movie (or feature film, either one).

On Friday, I'll have to bring that "Inside" special after all. Of course, in light of this, a lot of things on it will just be horribly poignant. (BB talking about how much he likes doing the show, how much he likes doing genre, and just how glad he is to *have a job*. etc.)

Yeah. As I said above -- actually, I still give the edge to Farscape, in terms of winning the prize for Shitty Treatment by Skiffy. I don't think this quite compares, still. I'm cursing Skiffy, but for some very different reasons than I cursed Skiffy over the whole FS thing.
