This was one of those "He wasn't already out?" situations for me (I suppose it's the cousin of the "I thought they were already dead?" reaction when you find out some celebrity died).

I could have sworn he came out years ago and was like, fairly activist and such.

Yeah -- well, it was news to me, really, but mostly because I wasn't paying attention. If he's had a partner for 18 years, it *had* to have been an open secret to a bunch of people. But, *shrug* -- the tenor of the article suggests that even he thinks he is now talking about his sexuality in a more open way than he had before. Or something.

Yeah, that what it seems like, now that I'm reading. Okay.

You know, I thought the same thing - that I'd heard it before. But I couldn't remember where from, so I figured if he was making a point of it now, maybe I just heard a rumor? Who knows. But I thought it was cool, anyway.

Way before I first came out I started admiring those who had. I always give extra kudos to people in the spotlight who're willing to put their sexuality out in the open like that. Even though it's less dangerous to life and limb (and career) than it used to be, it's still got a stigma attached to it that can be hard to overcome.

That's the same reason I'd rather spend my hard earned dollars at a business that advertizes in a gay paper or magazine, or gives their gay employees Domestic Partners rights, or sponsors a gay activity (like the Gay Olympics) if I have a choice. Just the fact that Disney, offers Domestic Partners insurance, and guarantees their gay employees equal benefits makes me more willing to spend my money on them. And despite how huge Kraft is, I'll keep in mind that they are one of the organizations sponsoring the Gay Olympics this year when I go grocery shopping, because there are organizations out there boycotting them both for exactly those reasons.

Okay...I'll step down off my soap box now...
