Backup: mostly complete, except for music library (the horror). They may be able to recover that data. They may not.

sorry about the suckage. hope the tunes are salvageable but if you need help replacing some of them you should put up a list. my husband has an online music library of stunningly large and varied proportions (i read fanfiction, he collects obscure music)

Yeah, I may resort to that. Things are looking grim for the option of them recovering any data from the thing. However, I may be able to get a hack that would allow me to just recover the files from my iPod, which would be ideal. *crosses fingers*

Oh, bleah. My sympathies... If you need to rebuild yer collection, you're welcome to paw through my collection and I can burn you some CDs or a DVD. 30 Gigs and counting, and a whole lot of Celtic, and other trad. stuff (middle-eastern, central asian, etc)

Thanks, hon. That's the scary thing about 5 years' worth of music collection -- I picked up music from *so* many different sources!

Man, they totally are. What I especially hate is that this is a 2-year-old machine that in another year I'd probably be dumping for a new one, as some things I want to do already run too slowly on it, and I'd like more memory and a faster processor and all. But no. I have to pay $300 just to return to the status quo. I hate that. :(

It doesn't look like they will be able to, but there are other avenues I'm exploring.

Granted, it was easier when things were on vinyl. But when things were on vinyl, I didn't have the option of having my entire music collection at my fingertips for a long car ride. *That* is what I'm talkin' about. I could drive across country and never have to listen to the same song twice, if I didn't want to.

Honest to god, my cellphone is glued to my hip. Granted, partly because its ring is so soft that I know I wouldn't hear it from another room. But even if I would not actually *answer* it in the bathroom -- it's there.

Yeah. The probability is that I can reconstruct it. A vast job, but over time, do-able. I have access to the playlists, on my iPod. (I may be able to hack the music files back off the iPod, too *crosses fingers*). But it's a pain in the ass.

Somehow, I bet that DJ's computer was better backed-up than mine was. Oh, I know the extent to which some of my plight is my own damn fault, at the moment.

I'm more genuinely irked by having to spend a not-insignificant chunk of money just to get myself back to the status-quo of a machine that was become rapidly outdated anyway. *grump*
