Remembering my icon, [livejournal.com profile] droneish just alerted me to this, which is apparently an entry from this year's Kinetic Sculpture Race, from Arcata to Ferndale, CA. There are no photos on this site, by the way, that are not truly delightful. But this is the SQUEE one (click for a larger image):

Oh my gosh, that just makes my day. :D Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] droneish!!!

(The fact that the crew are wearing little custom orca hats just absolutely makes it even more perfect.)

At the very least, I think I need the miniature hat version.

Oh. My. God.

I... I am having a sudden vision of taking that out onto the Charles and stalking the Duck Tour DUKWs.... That would be AWESOME.

IT GOES ON WATER??!

OMG, if it was kayak-shaped, all of [livejournal.com profile] orca_girl's friends would IMMEDIATELY buy it for her.

Seriously.

It's really sad, but when searching for other things, I came across some photos online of a white-water touring company, apparently in the UK (Wales, I think) (who knew they had whitewater in Wales?), that will rent you kayaks to go down this river... and for some reason (maybe the place is called Orca Tours or something, I don't recall), these kayaks are painted like orcas.

I WANT ONE SO BAD.

Unfortunately (this is the sad part), it appears that the orca-painted kayaks were custom made for this company, not something you can buy elsewhere on the internet.

Curses!

Ask for a kayak for Christmas. Or contributions to the fund.

AND THEN PAINT IT YOURSELF, YOU TALENTED ARTIST, YOU!

hey cool - you should email the team and ask if they'll give you a souvenir.
they have a kinetic sculpture race here every year and during the pre-race parade, the teams hand out souvenirs to the crowd with the team logo on it - keychains, bookmarks, postcards etc.

My best friend just moved to Portland and we're probably going to meet up for the Corvallis race this year — since she missed the World Championships. ;) One of the racers told me, with great reverence, that there was a wide array of excellent free food provided by the organizers. I do believe he was deep in the bosom of the munchies, at the time.

Just now I did try to find a way to contact Rob Hitchcock - the main auteur of the Whale of a Time sculpture - but found no website or email address. I know they bribed the official timer with a spare hat and other race-workers were trying to steal it (badly), so I don't think there were a lot to go around.

i love corvallis. it's an awesome little town. the strict land use laws (no wal-mart, no buildings taller than the courthouse, etc) have allowed it to keep its character so that it hasn't morphed into "anytown usa".

That is utterly excellent *beams* Kinda wish I'd had that as a tat instead of the Canucks logo.....

What am I SAYING????

Of course I wouldn't. But it's still *way* cool :o) And my_tallest is right. We would!
