Blah blah blah...
Feb. 24th, 2005 11:03 amSo, I was going to do the "20 Celebrities You Would Actually Sleep With" meme, until I realized that I could only come up with, like, 5. No, seriously. (Actually, I just thought of 2 more, and that's because in previous attempts to think of answers, I forgot about hockey... just like everybody else is going to because of the stupid cancelled NHL season grrrrrrr.)
raqs says I need to be less picky. I don't know if it's pickiness, per se; it's just that I have this disconnect between being able to admire people in an aesthetic way, and actually being able to step over a certain line. So anyway, that was clearly useless, therefore I decided to do the "10 Things I've Done That You Might Not Have" meme instead.
This meme is kind of good for me, because as my nearest and dearest will attest, I don't have the greatest memory in the world. Anything that makes me think hard to remember things is good. And this was hard, as there are people on my flist who've been my friends now for going on 20 years (eeek), and we've done an awful lot of things together, one way and another, and that leaves out a bunch of possible stuff ("...no, can't say that,
raqs was there.... no, that won't work,
chelidon was there... rats....").
1. Been stupid enough to climb the north face of the Acropolis of Sardis all by myself (and almost kill myself in the process).
2. Sat with a live shark in my lap.
3. Broken my elbow within microseconds of even just standing up on rollerblades for the first time.
4. Had Isaac Asimov make up a dirty limerick for me in exchange for a kiss.
5. Dressed up as a unicorn.
6. Had pictures of penises strewn around my room when the fire-department had to come in, for a paying art commission (the guy was really, REALLY picky about how the penises should look).
7. Spoken to Hugh O'Brian ("The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp", etc.) on the phone.
8. Been called "deadly", as a compliment.
9. Painted a dragon on the bottom of an in-ground swimming pool.
10. Had three total blood transfusions (before the age of 1 month).

Date: 2005-02-24 03:07 pm (UTC)ouch about the elbow, but *giggles* about #4. and wow, for #1, you are brave too you know.
i love the idea of a dragon on the bottom of the pool, very luscious to look down at through the ripples of the water.

Date: 2005-02-24 04:34 pm (UTC)It was certainly an EXPERIENCE, I can tell you that.
ouch about the elbow
Best part about the elbow? I broke it 2 weeks before the wedding of two of our good friends, in which I was supposed to be the maid of honor, and the dress had already been fitted, and let's just say, it had long sleeves that had not taken a cast into account.
Fortunately, the break was minor enough (compacted fracture within the joint) that the cast came off 2 days before the wedding, although I did sort of have to wear a sling.

"Stupid" is the word you're looking for, I think. As in: no, do not go out and decide on a whim, at dusk, without telling anyone in camp, that you are going to try to remember the path up the north face of the Acropolis, which you went up once several years ago, while jet-lagged; and when you get out there and it becomes painfully obvious that you DON'T remember, don't be an idiot and convince yourself [a] that it is "around the next bend", or [b] that there are parts of your backtrail that would be "too hard" to go back over, until you get yourself to the point where, in order to make it out of your predicament before utter darkness falls, you are forced to go straight up the side of a sheer-walled 300-meter peak composed of crumbling former sea-bottom (ancient mud), in order to reach the top in time to go down the well-marked path on the south face before it becomes too dark to see.
And if you're going to be that stupid? Take some water with you.
I'd been in some "plummeting" situations before, but not ones where I was able to pause, look down after the latest avalanche, and think about how long it would take them to find the body, and wondering in fact if they ever would think to look in the right place.
"Brave", at that point, extended only so far as, "you are NOT ALLOWED to cry until you reach the top; then you can cry all you like".

That was the theory, anyway. :) The bottom of the pool was painted matte black, for solar heating, and we did all the designs in white (I did the sea-dragon; others did mermaids and fishes and stuff). Sadly, we chose a paint that proved susceptible to flaking off, later.

Date: 2005-02-24 05:24 pm (UTC)lucky the elbow break was mild, but still a difficult joint to rehab. sometimes i still get surprised at how vulnerable the human body can be. *sigh*
sad about the flakey paint...i imagine it would have been great as a mosaic though.
hope all is well with you in the land of the snows. *g*
